Trend Forecasting Workshop
National Art and Design Saturday Clubs are an initiative set up and funded by the Sorrell Foundation. Goldsmiths moves into its second year (02) of running an Art and Design Saturday Club, delivering 30 three-hour workshops per year. The club allows young people aged 14 – 16 to gain insights into different art and design techniques through free interactive workshops, based in their local college or university.
In this workshop, we explored the concept of trends – what they are, how they form and how they are ‘predicted’ by professional forecasters. As a way of understanding the process, students were asked to occupy the position of trend forecasters, drawing on a variety of creative, social, economic, technological and environmental information sources to predict a trend for 15 years ahead.
Students were particularly interested changing perceptions of gender and what emerging ideas of ‘de-gendering' might mean for the future. Once they had researched and presented their trend panels, they illustrated how this would impact on the body through drawing and rapid prototyping with calico fabric.
